Even the captain can sense it, although his smirk seems to endorse it, rather than condemn it. I doubt Captain Stubing would ever have been down with May-October relationships such as these.

The 1949 ad is for Lurline cruises, part of the Matson Lines. Nope, never heard of them. But isn’t the artwork lovely? Lurline sounds like the name of a girl in a gabardine dress, brewing sweet tea on a window sill, if you ask me. You can bet the narrow-waisted girl in the chartreuse dress here was not named Lurline. Lurlines do not go on cruises with seniors.

This all sounds inviting: shuffleboard, dancing, listening to a radio because there were no televisions on board, having a gay evening under the Pacific moon. Oh, okay. Now I get it. Now the ascot makes sense on Creepy Coot. He’s not creepy at all. And, to be fair, he’s not at Coot Status level yet. Maybe just AARP. Perhaps he’s her affluent and benevolent uncle Jeffrey. Or perhaps perhaps perhaps he’s upper middle-aged Will to her young Grace. And not Grace Kelly. Grace Adler from TV’s Will & Grace.  Although, if you ask me–Jack and Karen would have been much more fun.
